Highlights of the North American Purchasing Manager Position

This is a high level role within the Supply Chain organization. The candidate will have primary accountability for managing all activities for products and services in the Chemicals Category (Approx $1b in spend). The incumbent will have a staff of seven, consisting of five strategic buyers and two analysts, and will have demonstrated the ability to mentor and develop his/her direct reports. The Purchasing Manager’s primary objective will be to optimize the total cost and total value of the Chemicals products and services category. The incumbent will develop long-term strategies to achieve corporate objectives. To accomplish this objective, the Purchasing Manager will be expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of supply management techniques and strategies, including: strategic sourcing; fact-based negotiation; supply market analysis; supplier relationship development; global sourcing/LCCS. The incumbent will work very closely with Business Units to understand their business needs/objectives.

Key Responsibilities of North American Purchasing Manager Position

  • Manage the North American raw material procurement team consisting of over $1b in spend with seven direct reports.
  • Be the Purchasing lead in communicating market and cost changes impacting North American purchases.
  • Develop and maintain long-term sourcing strategies for raw materials to support business requirements.
  • Identify and select source of specified raw materials, negotiate all elements (price, quantity, quality, services and delivery) of the transaction to maximize value of purchased materials.
  • Active member of the NA management team and global purchasing team.  Provide detailed analysis on the impact of price/volume and availability on purchasing/business decisions.
  • Work very closely with Business Group, R&D, Manufacturing and Process Technology to provide information regarding the competition, potential entrants, pricing initiatives and quality, service, price and distribution issues.
  • Research, develop and source alternatives such as product exchanges and make recommendations regarding internal manufacture vs. toll manufacture of materials based on market conditions.
  • Monitor quality and consistency of raw materials used in our intermediate and finished goods using the Supplier Care System to record quality issues/resolutions.  Consult with R&D and Manufacturing to investigate and resolve quality issues quickly and effectively.
  • Develop and maintain effective supplier relationships by facilitating communications, understanding and supplier access to Process Technology, R&D, Business Group and Client staff as necessary.

Essential Qualifications and/or Requirements

  • BS Degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Chemistry or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant Purchasing experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of purchasing petrochemicals
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervising staff, preferably within Purchasing
  • Worked in the chemical industry
  • Management experience
  • Demonstrated the ability to lead long term raw material strategies
  • Influencing skills
  • Ability to think creatively and work in a unstructured environment
