Key Responsibilities for Director of Global Logistics and Distribution Procurement Position
- Procurement
- Define, source, and negotiate logistics and distribution services.
- Design, implement and monitor the global logistics & distribution sourcing process
- Monitor service levels to ensure that performance statistics meet customer, vendor and company contractual requirements.
- Ensure customer/vendor contract requirements are administered and enforced.
- Aggregate provider costs and leverage efficiencies.
- Understand changes to transportation regulations to ensure full compliance by Company.
- Review opportunities to outsource management of logistics to utilize assets of other entities.
- Strategic Planning
- Work closely with Supply Chain Directors to provide optimized logistics solutions aligned with Business strategy.
- Develop a corporate strategic vision for the logistics & transportation process, communicate and execute the vision.
- Role-model strategic leadership with creative problem solving skills.
- Manage strategic issues, and balance the risks related to Logistics & Transportation projects, finding creative ways to implement improvements.
- Constantly search for process and cost improvements in logistics and transportation processes to grow revenue and profit for the company.
- Network Optimization
- Ensure full strategic alignment of projects and goals for Logistics and Distribution operations with the Supply Chains and other functional areas within the company.
- Work with the Supply Chains to design, build and execute transportation strategy including capital requirements, outsourcing and new processes for transport routing.
- Optimize supplier location/transportation costs on inbound freight working in partnership with the Supply Chain group to minimize costs and capitalize on backhauls.
- Apply knowledge of logistics and transportation methods, cost structures, service requirements, modes, tariffs, equipment, infrastructure and people availability in order to build optimal network design and optimize day-to-day business.
- Previous analytical and modeling project experience desired.
- Leadership
- Lead strategic development efforts associated with Logistics & Transportation operations.
- Demonstrate ability to think globally, plan strategically and implement change resulting in positive results.
- Manage a team of professionals in a matrix organization.
- Implementation of Change
- Function as a change agent within the area of responsibility and key influencer to the enterprise.
- Develop new and compelling ideas to improve execution by others in remote locations.
- Proven ability to create and communicate businesses case for change and work with people internally and externally to drive change.
- Metrics
- Establish, track and evaluate the costs, benefits and performance criteria for project success for all projects as well as day to day operations.
- Provide cost information regarding transportation of products.
- Establish service, quality, cost and people metrics that support overall business objectives. Must demonstrate strong leadership in establishing and managing corrective action process.
- Able to establish solid, analytical, ‘fact base’ for decision making.
- Manage forecasting process to enable businesses to more accurately plan and budget for changing costs of logistics and distribution.
- Partnering
- Review opportunities with other companies to consolidate assets for servicing common customer base or geographies.
- Engagement in professional organizations and other companies to understand industry ‘best practices’ and apply at Company.
- Collaborate with the Supply Chain groups
- People Management responsibilities
- Directly manage all activities of the strategic logistics and distribution procurement department.
- Manage the professional staff including: Competency assessment; development of objectives and necessary training; review performance; and recommend salary adjustments, promotions, transfers, hiring and/or discipline actions.
- Heavy emphasis on service to Supply Chain organizations and optimization projects.
Qualifications and/or Requirements
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must have direct, hands-on experience in many of the essential duties. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or experiences required.
- Ability to gather and analyze transportation cost, volume, and geographic data for reporting and analytical purposes to further refine and optimize logistics performance.
- Ability to aggregate same data and present to and manage suppliers through a sourcing negotiation
- Six Sigma or LEAN certification is a strong plus. A commitment to continuous improvement in a ever-changing industry (candidate must be flexible, creative and open to new ideas and ways of doing business).
- 3PL and 4PL experience a definite plus
- Ability to influence the organization at multiple levels to achieve strategic goals
- Superior interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication skills.
- • Education/Experience requirements
- Candidates must be experienced with SAP; Microsoft Office applications; Routing and Scheduling software; and third party freight payment providers. Proven software expertise is required.
- A MS degree in Business, Logistics, or Transportation is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of distribution management, transportation management, operations and accounting principles.
- Ten-plus years of professional experience are required. At least five years in a transportation or distribution company.
- Experience with global organization, living abroad.
